Just in case you missed this among yesterday’s news about developments in the middle east – Aljazeera reported that Saudi Arabia has enacted a new law against domestic violence.
‘The law gives those who report abuse the right to remain anonymous, as well as immunity from litigation should abuse fail to be proven in a court. It also urges witnesses to report abuse without having to disclose their identity.’
This is an example of a national policy affecting neighbourhood behaviour in a potentially profound way. A broad media campaign, including this image and concerted use of twitter, have been credited. And the global pervasiveness of such networked media make it more likely, I think, that the sceptics who say it will make no difference will be mistaken.
