Here are two comments I heard recently which seem to characterise our peculiar times.
Talking to the mayor of a town council the other day on the subject of poverty, I asked if they had a team working on it, and was told simply ‘We don’t have any teams in the council any more.’ Pause and think about the implications of that, multiplied across the country.
And from a public services worker reflecting on the past and referring to young people: ‘many of them don't understand what a trade union is.’
