I asked, how was your weekend? My friend said, I helped run a party for 25 kids.
Her neighbour had come to her and said, can you help me, I don't have any money and I have to organise a children's party.
There's a school-based network of mostly wealthy families and the children all go to each others' parties. These are events where the families seem to try to outdo each other with extravagant goody bags. This parent didn't want her child to get detached from some necessary friendships, so the whole class was invited.
My friend mucked-in willingly, giving up a substantial part of her weekend. They did it on a shoestring, prepared and served food, organised games and activities, all the children made things to take away, and apparently had a blast.
As so often, the kids were great. Whereas some of the parents showed up, stayed most of the way through, and it was too much for them to lift a finger to help. Presumably they thought the two women doing all the running around were hirelings making a fuss.
