Thanks to the folk at zero zero for the heads up on 826NYC. It's a volunteer-driven project which gets young people excited about writing through drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-school tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. The video.
The 826NYC project is a very interesting idea. There was some discussion about it at the recent Bookcamp, mainly because Kevin O'Neill used his session to discuss and gauge interest in starting something similar in London.
There seemed quite a bit of support for the idea, and so he's been pursuing it further and documenting his progress on his blog - http://looceefir.wordpress.com/2009/01/22/london-cool-writing-for-kids-project/
