Recent JRF report shows both benefits and disbenefits in local social networks. Place identity can be a source of strength, but it also appeals to the parochial. Local connections can give some young people strong advantages in the labour market, with family and friends providing valuable support; while wider social and spatial horizons can expand the range of opportunities young people consider and improve their prospects.
