Thanks to Martin Dudley for drawing my attention to The Great Cities Initiative, the latest from Project for Public Spaces. PPS always feels to me a bit like Living Streets' big brother, and for sure they're doing stuff with a community development perspective and in a big way.
The Great Cities Initiative expands their placemaking techniques, they say, into 'a comprehensive yet flexible process cities can use to improve themselves, place by place, neighborhood by neighborhood.' From here it looks like a rationalised repackaging of what they're doing already, but hey, that's business.
The key for me is this sentence: "instead of approaching the city through the lens of a complex, heavy-handed one-size-fits-all master plan, we should view it as an agglomeration of neighborhoods, each of which contains key places that can have a substantial impact in improving quality of life." Yes please I'll have some.
The image is of the large indoor market in Porto Alegre, Brasil, a superb public place.
