A sense of place - event

The Sensory Trust is running a two-day conference in Devon and Cornwall, UK, to explore the concept of place, what makes it special, what gives it sensory value, and how a sense of place can help create inclusive environments.

A Sense of Place - 30 June and 1 July 2004
Location: Cornwall & Devon
Programme
Day 1
Two spectacular venues on the first day will set the scene for our sensory travels.
Morning: Plymouth, Devon.
Afternoon: Carnglaze Caverns. We will be exploring different ways of bringing the sense of place directly into this conference.
Evening: the Eden Project. The Eden team have very kindly arranged a special event for us. Attendees will be able to explore the indoor Biomes, followed by a dinner in the Gallery restaurant, with special guest speaker.
Day 2
Location: Plymouth, Devon. An urban setting.
A full programme including talks and breakout sessions, and the chance to explore some of Plymouth's outdoor environmental scene.

Home Zone vignette It was about three in the afternoon, a cold bright 1st March, the front door was open and two girls rode their bikes out onto the child-friendly street. One was about seven or eight I reckoned, the other maybe five. School hours seemed not to apply. Despite the sharp cold, they were both barefoot. I winced as the older girl rode straight at the wall and I seemed to feel the shock of the tyre more than she. I wandered on and about 10 minutes later, I was on the other side of the estate, well beyond the dividing road that’s big enough to carry buses and trucks, when I heard a car stop suddenly and a horn sound. I turned to see the two barefoot girls, somehow looking both bewildered and scornful at the same time, on their bikes in the middle of the road. Life flowed back to normal around them as they crossed.

Neighbourliness review, Manchester Community Development Foundation has been contracted to carry out a short review of neighbourliness and social capital in Manchester, and research at local level began this week. We will be working in three areas – Northmoor, Openshaw Village, and Whalley Range. Monday and Tuesday we were in Northmoor, talking to people in the street, launderette, corner shops and pub, and doing some interviews and group sessions in the community centre, the online learning centre, and the hair salon. Here’s researcher Toby Gale talking to a resident before we strapped him in under the drier for a quick frizz... I'll be posting more here on the study as it progresses.
