Mass blog of everyday life: 17 October

I've sometimes thought that future historians will look back at our age as compulsively informative. The publicity for the 'One Day in History' mass blogging day (October 17) fits the bill and manages to leave a few words out as it does so.

Don't let that put you off. It's an adventurous stunt and I think we should all go for it - no reason why there shouldn't be some neighbourhood or community group contributions, from the minutes of a tenants' group meeting to a record of a conversation at the school gates.

A mass blog for the national record. The History Matters campaign has designated a day for the public to make historic. We want as many people as possible ... to record a 'blog' diary of this one day to be by the British Library (sic) and others as a record of our national life.

October 17 has been chosen deliberately as 'an ordinary' weekday of no particular significance. We want to record the mundane and ordinary lives of citizens and by doing something contributing valuable to the historic record (sic). Material that could be used by historians and researchers for time to come.

More.

well for an ordinary week day of no particular significance, it has been so much fun. Today was my mum's 60th birthday - Helen Bartram born 17.10.46 - we woke to a table of gifts, cake and many kind words from friends and family. Our lunch out was fantastic - my granddad of 91 came along and we celebrated mum's day together. My family have all been round to wish mum a happy birthday and many more years of health and happiness, so here's to it!

My name is Alison and I live in Crowborough, East Sussex with my husband of 37 years Alan. Today was my 61st birthday. Last year I retired from my job as Head of Languages in a large Chuirch of England school in Tunbridge Wells. I had phone calls today from my son who lives near Leicester and daughter who lives in Oxford. My granddaughter sang "Happy Birthday " to me on the phone all the way from Oxford.I spent the morning making a chocolate cake for my birthday. I am a committed Christian and I spent a short time in bible reading and prayer. In the afternoon I took a small group of adults for a French conversation class in my local church. We had a lovely time and enjoyed the chocolate cake together. When I came home I visited an elderly neighbour and took him a piece of birthday cake. I then made a special evening meal for my husband and myself - prawns with crab meat then lasagne with foccacia and salad followed by chocolate cake. It has been a lovely day and I have thoroughly enjoyed this special day.

Today was Edward's 18th birthday. Edward is our younger son. He attends King's Manor Sixth Form College, Shoreham-by-Sea.
This was a special event in an otherwise ordinary day.
